Rule Forcing Taxis to Go Green

New York City. A bustling little city with towers and offices and stores everywhere. But how do people get around to all of those places? Most likely the answer would be: taxis. The roads of New York are full of these busy yellow vehicles. Yet, to save the environment, these incessantly used cabs will need to 'go green'. The company that monitors these taxis, have set a new rule for the drivers. For fuel efficiency, the company set new rule which says from October 11, 2008 any new taxis purchased, must get at least 25 miles a gallon. They also wrote that the cabs purchased after 2009, will need to reach 30mpg. The current cab drivers will then have to change their cars to hybrids, since they are required to change their vehicles every 3-5 years. Mayor Micheal Bloomberg has said that he wants all city taxis to be hybrids by 2012. All hybrids run sufficiently on electricity, thus createing a more environment friendly city. The decision to change the city taxis into a more fuel efficient company, I believe, is a very good idea. To the current taxi drivers, it may not be so plesant, but the Earth is our home and we need to take care of it while we are still here.
